Well, I want to share with you, how I have celebrated Christmas the day
before here in Ukraine. On this holiday everyone tries to stay in the
company of those he or she was most familiar with, with their relatives or
close friends, yesterday, we as usual gethered with my famile and a couple of our family friends
There was a table with original, delicious and healthful salads and finger
food. The table was decorated tastefully and beautifully. I did this myself
and also my mother helped me to fo it. As we have a New Year tree since the
New Year, we put the table near it and were having our Christmas dinner.
Then we orginized several entertaining and amusing games.
It is the most amazing holiday, which we are celebrating, not including New
Year and bithdays. As a tradition, before the Christmas came, everyone have
to go to this neighbours, relatives, friends, or sometimes some unknown
people and bring them a special meal, wich is called here in Ukraine-
"Kut'ya". This meal is made of rise and some jam, or raisons, or nuts. When
people go to another houses with this meal, they tell people "Kalyadki"-
special songs and verses, and throw the rize and millet wishing them
happiness and no sorrows. As for me, I went only to my friends house and to
my aunts house, she gave me some shocolate and some money for this.
But, Honey, hope you will not be boring with this my long letter, I just
want you to know about my favourite holidays, my culture + it will be useful
too ;). Well, here comes the most interesting part of the holiday, people
say, that if on the Christmas night a young woman tells fortunes, the
predictions are always true and will become always true!. Well, this period
of fortunes-telling is called "svyatki". There are a lot of diffrent ways
to do it. Well,I will describe you one of the things that I did, I took a
piece of newspaper and put it on a plate and burnt it. Then, after it was
burnt, I put a candle opposite to that pile of ashe (the lights in the room
were turned off) and a shadow appeared on the wall, it is believed, that
what shape the shadow will take - that is a prediction of the future, I saw
a shadow of a road, it was a twist road, that meant a distant trip. Well, my
friend told me that I surely will go abroad in future. Well, I was very
happy to hear that. All the night I was not slipping, was telling the
fortunes with my friends and in the morning, when the sun haven't rised, I
stade for the whole service in church. Then, as I wrote you before, I was
having Christmas dinner with my family and friends. Hope you liked my
letter..I know it's too long and I don't want to bored you, but i also wanted to tell you about it.
